Let your light shine...

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Marianne Williamson A Return to Love

This quote is heard often and Marianne Williamson has it absolutely right. She says "your being small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you." Find your light. Find what creates total bliss in your life and remember how it feels in your skin, in your body, breath and mind. When we remember how it feels to shine and try to do it whenever possible, then we can bring authenticity to all our interactions. Sharing this bliss with others is valuable, for as we allow ourselves to shine, everyone around us has "permission to do the same." This does not mean feign smiles or laughter through all interactions when you feel crummy inside or saddened by memories and interactions. If you can try to meet each person where they are with love and compassion, shining from deep within, and honoring your true feelings, then we all shine.

We find this hard as we have developed and honed great mechanisms to protect this light—or true real self—from being extinguished, hurt, smothered, or harmed in some way. It almost feels as though it is easier to hide this "real" version of ourselves than to open up and feel what we feel and to share that REAL version with others. But as you share love and light with the world, you receive many more times that amount of love and light in return. Practice noticing your interactions. Do you shield yourself before each conversation? Do you crack jokes before anyone can ask you about your day and push people away before they even come close? Do you engage with people? Are your conversations full of compassion and trust and honesty? Do not beat yourself up with these questions; but begin to think about what blocks your light from shining through. Notice as you engage with people and this light shines within you, allow it to fill you up and come through you out into the world.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://doveryogaupdates.blogspot.com/2010/01/thought-for-week-let-your-light-shine.html' title='Thought for the Week! Here in the studio, it makes perfect sense. We see all of you coming in and taking the time to care for yourself in practice. It is so good to see you making this effort and caring for yourself.
It makes sense to take care of those around us and to support causes that are right and just. We care for ourselves in trying to care for others locally and around the world. We try to do the right thing in donating money and giving our time and ourselves to care and support others, especially in hard times. We give and yet it is almost more difficult to receive the love and care for ourselves. So as you come to your mat, to practice, to meditate, know that you can check in with yourself and take care of yourself. It may feel a little selfish at first because we do not look inward often enough to acknowledge our true self. Beginning this as part of your practice is the gateway to the flood of love you can give yourself and then the rush of love and care you can share with the rest of the world. By opening up, listening, acknowledging our higher selves we can care for ourselves better and begin to know ourselves in a new way.

Enjoy this quote from Julia Butterfly Hill "May we love ever more. May we motivate ourselves to committed love in Action. May we motivate ourselves to live the life we wish to see in the world. May we be the transformation we wish to see in the world. From the inside out...From the roots branching upwards...From the heart to thought to word to action. Through life's trials and hardships we can arise beautiful and free."

Thought for the Week!

Try a different style of yoga with a new instructor. Prana the vital life force that is connected with the breath and as we breathe we regulate the flow of prana in the body. The practice of attempting to harness prana or channel this energy through the body is known as pranayama.

As we inhale and exhale, we connect with the expression of the Divine Spirit. We bring this awareness to our practice everytime we come to our mat and practice yoga in the studio and in our home practice. We want to encourage you to take a step back from your yoga practice and focus on your breath practice, your pranayama. Take time to meditate. As Yogi Bhajan says "Between you and Divine Spirit, between you, the creation, and the Creator, there is only one link, and that is the breath of life. God gave you the breath of life, but you life with shallow breathing, and out of your life you expect deep results. It is not possible. The art of deep breathing is also the art of real living."

Immune Booster Soup!

Check out this recipe for those of you who feel like they need a boost!

It was published in Yoga Journal several years ago. If you want an extra immune boost, use 1/2 the total garlic you desire initially, and then add the remaining 1/2 of the garlic (crushed) after the soup is cooked, along with the lemon juice. Also, you can double the ingredients to make an extra large batch!
4 cups mushroom or chicken broth
1 small yellow onion, chopped
4-10 garlic cloves (to taste, crushed and chopped)
1 carrot, grated
4-8 fresh shiitake mushrooms, sliced
1-3 tbsp. grated gingerroot (to taste)
3 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley
Bring the broth, onion, garlic, carrot, mushrooms, and gingerroot to a slow boil. Reduce the heat and simmer on low, covered, for 15 minutes or until the vegetables are soft.
Remove from heat; add the lemon juice, parsley and any remaining garlic. Cover and steep for 5 minutes.

Check us out on Facebook!

Gang, if you are a facebook user (like so many of us are these days!) than be sure to look up Dover Yoga and add us to your friend list.
